Simplot Games Results

We had our largest contingent (27) of athletes in the last 20 years attend the Simplot Games this past weekend at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.

The Girls 4X800m Relay (Nikki Smith, Sara Musselman, Sophie Baird, and Maddie Bench) set a new school record of 9:33.63, but were then disqualified for a substitution technicality.

McKay Johns placed 4th overall in the Boys 1600m Run with a time of 4:18.76, which is 5th all-time at AFHS.

Casey Clinger and Zac Jacklin made the podium in the Boys 3200m Run earning 4th place in  9:25.67 (8th all-time at AFHS) and 6th place in 9:32.93, respectively.

Sammy Hollingsworth and Lexi Wright earned finals medals in the Girls 1600m Run with a 9th place in 5:12.07 (5th all-time at AFHS) and 19th place in 5:17.18, respectively.

NCAA Eligibility Information

The NCAA’s outreach and education efforts related to initial-eligibility continue to remain in full swing.   These efforts focus on both Division I standards for college-bound student-athletes enrolling on or after August 1, 2016 and Division II college-bound student-athletes enrolling on or after August 1, 2018.  The following materials, which  have been made available to high school and non-scholastic athletic communities, also may be valuable to your colleagues, as they look to assist students and parents with the initial eligibility, recruiting and college selection processes.   Please refer to, or our new outreach site, for even more information.
·         Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete- The Guide is a highly comprehensive tool, that has been designed to help you understand the NCAA initial-eligibility process and to prepare student-athletes for transitioning from high school to becoming an NCAA Division I or II student-athlete.
·         Initial-Eligibility Brochure- A quick guide to the standards and steps that it takes to become an NCAA Division I or II student-athlete.
·         Eligibility Center Quick Reference Guide- A complete breakdown of the NCAA Divisions I and II initial-eligibility standards.
·         Division I New Academic Requirements Document- This document discusses the new academic standards for student-athletes enrolling at a Division I college or university on or after August 1, 2016.
·         Division II New Academic Requirements Document- This document discusses the new academic standards for student-athletes enrolling at a Division II college or university on or after August 1, 2018.
·         2012-13 Your Path to the Student-Athlete Experience Presentation (for Students)- A PowerPoint presentation for students and parents to provide insight into the registration and certification process.
Also, in an effort to continue to spread the word about this important new information, we are pleased to announce that the NCAA’s Initial-Eligibility course available through has been updated with the new academic requirements and is being made available free of charge!  Please visit and take 30-45 minutes to complete the Initial Eligibility course.  This course will familiarize you and your colleagues with the new academic requirements, as well as the required NCAA Eligibility Center registration and certification process for college-bound student-athletes.

We had one of our largest number of athletes participate at an indoor meet yesterday and today at the UHSTCA Indoor Championships held at the Kearns Olympic Ice Oval.

The girls 4X800m relay team of Maddie Bench, Cami Squires, Sara Musselman, and Sophie Baird won in a school record 9:41.06. The girls B team took 3rd place in 10:06.89.

Casey Clinger placed 2nd in the boys 1600m Run in 4:25.69.

The Great Southwest Classic

4 Cavemen attended the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque, New Mexico last weekend as members of the Utah All-Star Track and Field Team. The boys Team placed 2nd behind Texas, while the girls placed 3rd behind Colorado and Missouri. There were 15 mens teams and 20 womens teams that scored at the meet.

Jacob Chase and Daniel Bentley earned medals in the 2000m Steeplechase, placing 5th (6:28.40) and 6th (6:28.42), respectively.

McKay Johns earned a medal in the 3200m Run, placing 4th in 9:53.05. He also ran a leg on the 7th place 4X800m Relay Team.

Ariel Jolley placed 17th in the Girls Pole Vault with a mark of 9'9".

Coach  Mostert served as the State Selection Chair for distance and attended as a team coach and chaperone.

Utah State Track and Field Championships

The Cavemen had three individual State Champions crowned Saturday at the State meet held at BYU.
Ariel Jolley won the girls pole vault competition with a school record jump of 10'8". She just missed setting a new State record of 10'10.5". On the Boys side, Jonah Trinnaman won the 100m dash in a time of 10.73 seconds, while Connor McMillan won the 3200m run in 9:10.47. Tyler Bell was also named Academic All-State.

The boys team ended up in 5th place, while the girls tied for 21st place.
